1. The price and the seller

Most fakes are given away by the deal itself. Rolex steel sports models sell at or above list price, so a Submariner or GMT-Master far below the market is the clearest red flag there is. Compare any asking price with the table below and with our market tracker, which follows live eBay asks for each reference. Buy from an authorized dealer, Rolex Certified Pre-Owned, or a pre-owned dealer with a long record; see our retailer reviews.

2. The dial and crystal

  • Cyclops: the date lens magnifies about 2.5 times, so the date nearly fills it. Many fakes magnify less and the date looks small.
  • Rehaut: modern Rolexes have "ROLEX" engraved repeatedly around the inner ring between dial and crystal, with the serial number at 6 o'clock, crisp and perfectly aligned with the minute markers.
  • Laser-etched crown: a tiny Rolex crown is etched into the crystal at 6 o'clock on modern models. It's very hard to see without a loupe and angled light.
  • Printing: text on a real dial is razor-sharp with even spacing. Look for fuzzy edges, misspellings and misaligned markers under magnification.

3. The case and bracelet

  • Case back: almost all Rolexes have a plain, solid case back. A clear display back showing the movement is a warning sign on most models.
  • Engravings: the reference number sits between the lugs at 12 o'clock and the serial at 6, under the bracelet, with clean, deep engraving.
  • Weight and feel: real Rolexes use solid links and end pieces and feel dense. Light, rattly bracelets with folded links point to a fake or a very old piece.
  • Dimensions: check the case against the real specs. A Submariner that measures 43 mm or a Datejust that's too thick isn't what it claims to be.

4. The movement

Every modern Rolex is automatic (apart from the hand-wound Cosmograph Daytona of old and the Oysterquartz of the 1970s to 2000s), and the seconds hand sweeps smoothly. A seconds hand that ticks once a second means quartz. Only a watchmaker opening the case can confirm the movement, and good fakes now use copied movements, which is why professional inspection is the real test.

5. Get it inspected

For a real answer, take the watch to a Rolex authorized dealer or service center, or an independent watchmaker who works on Rolex. They can open the case and check the movement in minutes. When buying used, make the sale conditional on that inspection.
