Citizen
Citizen is a Japanese watch and precision-equipment maker headquartered in Nishitōkyō, Tokyo. It traces its origins to the Shokosha Watch Research Institute, founded by Kamekichi Yamazaki in 1918, and was incorporated as Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. in 1930. Besides watches, the group makes machine tools and electronic components, and it owns the watch brands Bulova, Frédérique Constant, Alpina, Arnold & Son and Angelus.
Citizen is closely associated with light-powered watches. In 1976 it released the Crystron Solar Cell, which it describes as the first analog quartz wristwatch powered by a solar cell, and since the mid-1990s it has sold its solar-charging technology as Eco-Drive. Its Miyota division supplies quartz and mechanical movements to other watch companies worldwide. Its premium and specialist collections under the Citizen name include The Citizen, Campanola, Attesa, Promaster, Series8, xC and Tsuyosa.
