Watch Almanac

Best watch boxes

A watch box keeps a collection dust-free, stops watches knocking against each other, and makes it easy to pick one in the morning. The main choices are how many slots, what it's made of and whether you want to see your watches through a glass lid.

What to look for

  • Slots: buy for the collection you'll have in a year, not today
  • Pillow size: large or thick watches need deeper compartments and pillows that flex
  • Lining: soft suede or microfibre won't scratch polished cases
  • Glass lid if you want display, solid if the box sits in sunlight, which fades dials and straps

Will your biggest watch fit?

Check compartment depth and pillow size against your largest watch. Of the current watches we've measured, 47 are 44 mm or wider and 22 are 15 mm or thicker, mostly divers, chronographs and G-Shocks. Those need the deeper slots some boxes and cases advertise for larger watches.

The picks, cheapest first

Chosen from published specs, prices and what owners and reviewers consistently report. We haven't tested these ourselves. Prices are US list prices as of October 2026 and vary by retailer.

Worth knowing

  • Longines advises storing watches away from direct sunlight, humidity and magnetic fields, and suggests keeping humidity below about 50%. (longines.com)
  • Orient (Epson) recommends storing watches at normal room temperature (roughly 5-35°C) in a well-ventilated place, away from magnets and high humidity. (watch-dl1.epson.biz)
  • Pillow size matters: Tawbury offers multiple pillow sizes and notes that on wrists above about 19 cm (7.5 in), bracelets will sit loosely around standard pillows. (tawbury.com)
  • TAG Heuer warns that moisture trapped in a case can mark the dial and, at worst, corrode steel movement parts, so store watches dry; a silica gel pack in the box is a common suggestion. (magazine.tagheuer.com)
  • A watch box does not keep automatic watches running; Longines suggests winding an unworn automatic every two to three weeks, or using a winder. (longines.com)
