Certina
Certina is a Swiss watch brand founded in Grenchen in 1888 by Adolf and Alfred Kurth, who began by making movements and supplies for other watchmakers before producing complete watches. The family joined ASUAG's General Watch Co. in 1971, and Certina has been part of the SMH (now Swatch Group) since 1983. During restructuring in the 1970s it stopped making its own calibres.
The brand's defining idea is DS (Double Security), introduced in 1959 by Hans and Edwin Kurth: the movement is suspended inside a reinforced case for better shock protection and water resistance. A DS watch was taken on a Himalayan expedition to Dhaulagiri. Current models carry the DS name across sport, aqua, urban, heritage and diving collections, including the DS Action Diver, the DS PH200M and the DS Powermatic 80. All Certina watches are Swiss Made.
