What is a salmon dial?

A dial in a soft pinkish copper colour, prized on vintage chronographs and back in fashion on modern watches.

History

Salmon dials first appeared in the 1930s and 1940s on watches from Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin and others, made with copper-toned or rose-gold-coloured finishes. They were made in small numbers, which is why vintage salmon chronographs are among the most sought-after dials at auction.

Recently they've become a trend, from independents to microbrands like Baltic, as a warmer alternative to silver or cream.

Wearing one

Salmon pairs best with steel or rose gold cases and brown, grey or navy straps. It varies a lot between brands, from almost peach to copper, so look at real photos in daylight before you buy.
